The French Opinel knife has been a classic for, well, a very long time. The company was founded back in the 1890s and the original knife with the wooden handle and folding blade was primarily considered a peasant’s knife, useful, functional and favored by the working class. Over the past century its has worked its way well beyond its humble beginnings and is now carried in a just about every fancy kitchen wares shop throughout the US and Europe.
Recently we came across what can best be described as the new millennium upgraded Opinel knife for the more active outdoors type. This one seems to be mostly targeted towards fishermen, with a gut hook, a fire starter and a soft elastomer grip, all great little tweaks to the design which will help you better prepare a delicious dinner. It comes in an orange and green. While not exactly a true Opinel it does remain quite faithful to the original and it’s still made by the same French family.
This particular blade that we love, is the number 12 version there are other sporty versions available on the website, have a look and see which one suits you best.
